I’m now enjoying my iMac computer which I got on January 15, 2008. Before I switched to an iMac, I had been using a Windows based computer for the past 15 years. I remember that the first computer our family had was an Apple which I used to play games on. I had a Toshbia notebook which came with DOS (operating system = OS) then I installed Win 3.11 then I upgraded to Windows 95. Later I got a Gateway desktop which had Windows 95 on it and I upgraded to Win 98. I then got an HP desktop which had Windows XP Home and I loved this operating system, much easier to use and understand. My HP desktop finally crashed on me with some hardware failure’s so I got myself a Apple iMac after 5 months of hard research.

On all the above Windows based computers I had to maintain the computer every month or so to keep it running smoothly and virus free. Just one of those things I need to do, since I was using the internet, recieving emails, recieving files and more. Soon spyware started to become more available everywhere as I went on the internet and it became a problem. I was now cleaning spyware every day, checking for viruses once a week, keeping the spyware and virus programs up to date, defragging the computer, checking disk for errors and reformatting the whole computer once a year or at times I was reformatting more to try resolve problems! Basically I was doing more maintaince cleaning, than actually enjoying using my computer.

I had seen these ‘beautiful’ looking white iMac desktops out there all over the place, in offices, dr’s offices, on tv programs and in shops and was beginning to love the look of them. After finding out my HP desktop computer harddrive was failing on me and could fail at anytime and I was soon looking at getting a new computer, I started my research into Apple iMac desktops and Macbooks (laptop) computers. I soon realised that the iMac desktops were being upgraded to a nice Aluminum look and that the big harddrive box (on windows based computers) is all inside the iMac LCD screen. I found out that iMac’s can also bootup Windows using bootcamp or other programs/applications meaning if I couldn’t find an Apple application to use, I could always boot the iMac into windows and use the windows based programs, so basically I had the best of both worlds on one computer! But then my iMac would be at risk of viruses again, so I decided if I was going to get a iMac then I won’t use windows on it ever! Apple computers don’t have viruses or spyware so that was a huge plus for me, meaning less or no maintaince.

I love my iMac as it’s just so simple to use!! The only maintaince I do is run the three scripts manualy by MainMenu. I’m loving how I can just enjoy using the computer without any problems and the on going cleaning. The flat keyboard was something I got used too and learning the keyboard shortcuts. I still use my trackball mouse which I’ve used on the last computer I had. The iMac LCD screen is ‘very’ clear and I enjoy watching dvds on here rather than my tv. Apple’s website has a good support page called Switch 101 Migrate to Mac, this showed me how to adapt my windows working habits to the Mac, what name changes there were for the tools eg windows programs is called Applications on a Mac and windows Control Panel is called System Prefrences on a Mac etc. A couple weeks after using my iMac I seemed to have more time on my hands as I had no maintaince to do, but I was able to find other things to learn and do on the Mac.
