I represent New Zealand in the 'Power Blacks team' and compete against the six states of Australia in their National Electric Wheelchair Sports (N.E.W.S) Tournament in Australia. We play 3 full days of a Round Robin, one sport per day, then the Finals are on another day. I have been competing in Australia for 11 years now. I have been to Canberra, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane. In 2004 I was among a group who were awarded a special badge for 10 years participation at the N.E.W.S tournament.
Wheelchair sports is a huge part of my life, it's a chance to build my confidence and compete with others of a similar age and condition, keeps me physically and mentally active, and gives me a great goal to work towards. My favorite sport is hockey, then soccer then rugby.
All the team members have Muscular Dystrophy or a related Neuromuscular Condition (NMC) and use a powerchair for there everyday mobility. I have been awarded the NZ Best and Fairest Player Trophy for 1994, 1996, 1997 and 2000 - 2005 and feel proud to receive these. Here are some photos of me competing in the National Electric Wheelchair Sports Tournament in Australia and at our weekend practices.
