I have a Neuromuscular condition (NMC) which is slowly progressive, it affects my muscles and nerves. I have Isthmic Spondylolisthesis at L5-S1 vertebra as a Grade 1 of the Lumbar level of my spine. I also have Epilepsy which is mild and well controlled. Having these does not stop me from doing anything!! and I live life to the fullest. I am very Independent and try to keep my independence for as long as I can. I use an Invacare TDX 5 powerchair for my every day mobility, which has power Tilt/Recline on it to help with pressure relief and comfort.
I enjoy doing lots of things as I like to keep busy, here are some of the things I really enjoy when out of home:
- shopping at the malls and spending money *who doesn’t* hehe
- catching up with my friends and having a drink
- going to the movies with a large bucket of popcorn and a coke with no ice!
- wheeling along Mission Bay, the Viaduct and the waterfront
- visiting Waiheke Island by Ferry
- going to the cricket and rugby games with my brother at Eden Park
- going out and spending time with family
I’ve had a couple of jobs and enjoyed working at them. My first job I had was at Unitec as an Administration Assistant in the Student Information Centre. I was able to help students and give them course information brochures, data entry, mail outs and some clerical work. I then went to work at the Muscular Dystrophy Association doing office work, data entry, clerical, Assistant Editor of the 'In Touch' magazine and other tasks and really enjoyed it. I’ve had a couple years off work and now back working. I’m now working at a Community Centre and my role is Office Assistant taking on bookings, answering phones, banking, helping customer’s, updating flyers, creating new flyers and a whole lot more. It’s a part time job but keeps me busy and I’m enjoying it.
I’m now back into looking for more work, either from home or out in the community or a bit of both.
